What Are Dermal Lip Fillers?

Today’s fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a substance that is naturally found in the body. Because HA is something our body  naturally produces, it’s happily accepted and once injected into the skin it’s easily broken down after a period of time.

Are lip fillers safe?

Lip fillers are an aesthetic treatment therefore there’s always a chance that something could go wrong. However, the process of lip fillers is very easy so if you find a reputable practitioner the chances are low.

Are lip fillers painful?

This is all dependent on the practitioner’s method and the client’s pain threshold. Numbing cream can be used to reduce the chances of pain, but people have compared it to the same pain as having your eyebrows threaded.

What does treatment involve?

If you opt for numbing treatment, a cream will be applied 15-30 minutes before treatment to ensure numbness of the area. The filler will then be injected in a series of small injections and the area will be massaged to ensure even distribution.

The treatment time can vary from 30 minutes to an hour.

What happens afterwards?

The area will be a little swollen but you should see the effects straight away. You may be advised to avoid coffee, alcohol , hot drinks and the sun for 24 hours. You are advised to drink 2 litres of water a day for 14 days to stay hydrated and keep your lips plump.

Will I need a top up?

How much filler you want will be discussed with your practitioner. If you decide after a few weeks (when the swelling has gone down completely) that you would like more filler, then your practitioner can inject more. Filler will naturally breakdown over time so you may find yourself needing more 6-12 months after your initial treatment.
